The Story of India with Michael Wood [Blu-ray] (2009)

Part One: Beginnings

Michael Wood travels throughout the subcontinent, tracing the richness and diversity of its peoples, cultures and landscapes. Through ancient manuscripts and oral tales Michael charts the first human migrations out of Africa. He travels from the tropical backwaters of South India through lost ancient cities in Pakistan to the vibrant landscapes of the Ganges plain. In Turkmenistan dramatic archaeological discoveries by Greek archeologist Viktor Sarianidi cast new light on India’s past. In Turkmenistan, there they find a civilisation named “Zorashtrian”, and there they also find horse drawn carts or chariots called Raths which are mentioned in the Rig Veda. Wood also attempts to re-create soma, an ancient drink recorded in the Rig Veda.

Part Two: The Power of Ideas

The second episode in Michael Wood’s series moves on to the revolutionary years after 500BC – the Age of the Buddha. Travelling by rail to the ancient cities of the Ganges plain, by army convoy through Northern Iraq, and down Pakistan’s Khyber Pass, he shows how Alexander the Great’s invasion of India inspired her first empire. The Rise of Maurya kingdom.

Part Three: Spice Routes and Silk Roads

In this episode he traces India in the days of the Roman Empire; the Greco-Roman navigator Hippalus discovered monsoons for the Romans. In Kerala the spice trade opened India to the world, whilst gold and silk bazaars in the ancient city of Madurai were a delight for visiting Greek traders. From the deserts of Turkmenistan Michael travels down the Khyber Pass to Pakistan to discover a forgotten empire, the (Kushan Empire) of Northern India that opened up the Silk Route and at Peshawar built a lost Wonder of the World. That wonder nowadays people known as “Bare Raja Ka Tila”. Also offers an interesting theory about the death of Emperor Kanishka at Mathura.

Part Four: Ages of Gold

The achievements of the country’s golden age, including how India discovered zero, calculated the circumference of the Earth and wrote the world’s first sex guide, the Kama Sutra. In the south, the giant temple of Tanjore built by emperor Rajaraja Chola and traditional bronze casters, working as their ancestors did 1,000 years ago are shown. Michael Wood calls Tamilnadu, “The only surviving ‘Classical Civilization’ in the world.

In an interview to The Hindu Michael Wood said “One that’s 2,000 years old like ancient Greece or Rome. Tamil is the last living classical Indian language. The first surviving work in Tamil, a 300 B.C book on linguistics, refers to an already existing culture. Tamil is older than any modern European language. I wanted to remind Western-centric audiences, who implicitly assume the superiority of Western modes of thought, that Tamil is one of 23 official Indian languages, with a literature comparable to any in the West. It makes viewers sit up and question their assumptions”

Part Five: The Meeting of Two Oceans

The documentary series about the history of India charts the coming of Islam to the subcontinent and one of the greatest ages of world civilisation: the Mughals. Mahmud of Ghazni leads an expedition to Somnath and destroys the temple of Shiva and all idols there. Michael Wood visits Sufi shrines in Old Delhi, desert fortresses in Rajasthan and the cities of Lahore and Agra, where he offers a new theory on the design of the Taj Mahal. He also looks at the life of Akbar, a Muslim emperor who decreed that no one religion could hold the ultimate truth, but whose dream of unity ended in civil war.

Part Six: Freedom and Liberation

This episode examines the British Raj and India’s struggle for freedom. Wood reveals how in South India a global corporation came to control much of the subcontinent, and explores the magical culture of Lucknow, discovering the enigmatic Briton who helped found the freedom movement. He traces the Amritsar massacre, the rise of Gandhi and Nehru, and the events that led to the Partition of India in 1947.

Ancient Discoveries is a documentary television series that premiered on December 21, 2003 on The History Channel. The program focuses on ancient technologies. The show’s theme is that many inventions which are thought to be modern have ancient roots or in some cases may have been lost and then reinvented. The program is a follow-up to a special originally broadcast in 2005 which focused on technologies from the Ancient Roman era such as the Antikythera mechanism and inventors such as Heron of Alexandria. Episodes of the regular series have expanded to cover other areas such as Egypt, China and East Asia, and the Islamic world.

Ancient Discoveries was made for The History Channel by Wild Dream Films based in Cardiff in the UK. Much of the filming was done on location across the world. The series uses contributions from archaeologists and other experts, footage of historical sites and artifacts, computer generated reconstructions and dramatized reconstructions along with experiments and tests on reconstructed artifacts.

Series 1 was broadcast in 2003, and consisted of three episodes.

Episode 1: Ancient Computer

This episode investigates the Antikythera Mechanism, a computer-like device that may have been used to calculate the movements of stars and planets. It also highlights ancient inventors Archimedes and Ctesibius.

Episode 2: Doctor to the Gladiators

This episode discusses ancient medical devices and procedures, and profiles the Greek physician Galen, who practiced eye and brain surgery 2,000 years ahead of his time.

Episode 3: Heron of Alexandria

This episode discusses Heron of Alexandria, who created automatic doors and coin-operated machines.

Warfare technology is examined, including the Helepolis, a square fortified tower on wheels; and “Greek Fire,” an incendiary liquid that stuck to people and objects and couldn’t be extinguished with water.

Episode 3: Ancient Power

Ancient mechanical devices are examined: A jar that appears to be an electric battery, a flour mill in France that is run by waterwheels, and Archimedes use of solar power to defeat the Romans.

Part 1: Mind Control

To begin, Michael traces the sinister ways this science has been used to try to control our minds. He finds that the pursuit of mind control has led to some truly horrific experiments and left many casualties in its wake. Extraordinary archive captures what happened – scientists systematically change the behaviour of children; law abiding citizens give fatal electric shocks; a gay man has electrodes implanted in his head in an attempt to turn his sexuality. Michael takes a hallucinogenic drug as part of a controlled experiment to try to understand how its mind-bending properties can change the brain. This is a scientific journey goes to the very heart of what we hold most dear – our free will, and our ability to control our own destiny.

Part 2: Emotions

Dr Michael Mosley continues his exploration of the brutal history of experimental psychology. Experiments on the human mind have led to profound insights into how our brain works – but have also involved great cruelty and posed some terrible ethical dilemmas. In this film, Michael investigates how scientists have struggled to understand that most irrational and deeply complex part of our minds – our emotions. Michael meets survivors – both participants and scientists – of some of the key historical experiments. Many of these extraordinary research projects were captured on film – an eight-month-old boy is taught to fear random objects, baby monkeys are given mothers made from wire and cloth, and an adult is deliberately violent before a group of toddlers. Michael takes part in modern-day experiments to play his own small part in the quest to understand emotions.

Part 3: Broken Brains

Dr Michael Mosley concludes his series exploring the brutal history of experimental psychology by looking at how experiments on abnormal brains have revealed the workings of the normal brain. He meets remarkable individuals like Karen, who suffered from a rare condition – alien hand syndrome – which meant that one of her hands constantly attacked her. And Julia, who seems to have recovered from her stroke – until experiments reveal she is unable to recall the name of any object. Michael explores the case of an amnesiac known for years only by his initials, HM, who became the most studied individual in the history of psychology and whose extraordinary case opened a window on how our memory works. He visits the multi-million dollar centre which has been set up since HM died to map his unique brain down to the level of an individual neuron.

Part 3: Dallas

Reverse the clock over millions of years and we’ll uncover the secrets of Dallas, Texas. From the ancestors of the famous Longhorn cattle that brought us the cowboys, to the mammoths, large cats and overgrown armadillos of the Ice Age, everything about Dallas was always BIG. Dive in to Ocean Dallas and swim with the Great White Sharks of the Cretaceous Period and the mosasaurs that battled them for dominance–right where downtown Dallas stands today. Then head west to Fort Worth and the home of the largest dinosaur to walk the earth in North America: Paluxysaurus — the State Dinosaur of Texas. And if you think Texas is oil country, think again. Part 4: Los Angeles

Where movie stars strut on the red carpet, bloody-fanged sabertooth cats once stalked the grasslands. Where sun-worshippers bask on L.A. beaches, dinosaurs fought life and death battles. Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the world, but in its distant past it was home of enormous Ice Age mammals, ravenous carnivorous dinosaurs and underwater sea monsters the size of a truck. The city emerged from the sea as gigantic tectonic plates clashed and gave birth to the earthquakes that still rock the city. Explore the history of the City of the Angels as it rewinds back in time… ten thousand years… fifty thousand years… 80 million years… to a mysterious and bloody past.

Part 5: New York

It’s the ultimate city, packed with 8 million people and overgrown with skyscrapers. But before this land of glass steel and concrete sprouted, New York City was home to alien worlds and strange creatures stretching back over many millennia. Eight-ton elephant-like mastodons walked down what is today 5th Avenue, and a sea turtle bigger than a compact car swam directly over Midtown Manhattan. The Big Apple still bears the scars of a time when it was obliterated by a titanic glacier, and it sits on the site of a 200-million year old volcanic catastrophe. This is also where some of the world’s first dinosaurs walked. And although it enjoys views of the Atlantic Ocean today, New York City was once in the middle of a vast desert continent. No matter the era, ii’s been the center of the action throughout the history of our planet.

Part 6: Washington DC

The corridors of power run through its veins, a land of constant conflict and battles for supremacy. All of its history combines to tell the tale of why D.C. looks the way it does, and why it was built where it is. When the city was founded, was it really on a swamp? Before it was the nation’s capital city, Washington D.C. was once a beach town whose waters were teeming with the largest shark the world has ever known. Dry-land was patrolled by a predator that looked like a dog, but was bigger than a grizzly. Tens of millions of years earlier it endured an asteroid impact that wiped out all life. Further back in time it hosted a ferocious meat-eating dinosaur that hunted building-sized plant-eaters ten times its own size, while directly over what is today the Washington Monument, flying reptiles with 30-foot wingspans terrorized the skies.
